Made By Hand, a project by Brooklyn-based film studio Bureau of Common Goods, is a series of short films meant to promote all things “made locally, sustainably, and with a love for craft.” Only three episodes in, they’re already killing it, producing inspiring, beautifully shot portraits of Brad Estabrooke of Breuckelen Distilling Company, Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn, and in their latest release, Greenpoint-based rooftop beekeeper, honey producer, backyard farmer, and writer Megan Paska (aka Brooklyn Homesteader).

The film was shot last summer at Greenpoint’s Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, one of several locations in Brooklyn at which Paska keeps hives. It was released last week.

On beekeeping, Paska says:

“Being a beekeeper has given me a real sense of purpose. That’s my religion, that’s what keeps me sane, that’s what keeps me connected to the world…This is the first time in my life that I’ve felt like I’m really on the right path…I feel it’s my duty to share it with people…I think that it’s something I’ll do for the rest of my life…I think we all sort of wander this world looking for that exact thing, and I feel really fortunate to have found it. I hope to just continue to build on that.”

On the growth in interest in urban farming and beekeeping, Paska says:

“Just in the past couple of years, people have been really into the food sustainability movement and food secutiry, so things like keeping bees and growing your own vegetables and raising chickens for eggs doesn’t seem so nutty anymore. It seems totally sensible to have some control over your food sources.

There are a tremendous amount of businesses in Brooklyn that are supportive of this sort of lifestyle, either on a community level or an individual level. So they really try to promote some self-sufficiency. They promote food awareness. So people are really getting into it and really starting to accept it as a way of life, and it’s really exciting to be a part of that.”
