This week, NonaBrooklyn is giving away five $15 gift certificates to Rachel Graville’s Iris Café on Columbia Place in Brooklyn Heights.

The café opened last winter, and has garnered great reviews from the NY Times, New York Magazine and … just about everyone else.

Rachel is committed to sourcing just about all of her ingredients from local, sustainable-minded producers, and those ingredients shine in her delicious baked goods, sandwiches, and breakfast fare.

She says: “I strive to use simple, fresh ingredients and do as little as possible to them. That often means that the best come from nearby; either produce from the Borough Hall Greenmarket or local milk, meats, and eggs from upstate. We have a small plot in the community garden next to the cafe that keeps us in basil at least! Stay tuned for grape tomatoes and fingerling eggplant (yes, they exist!) soon!”

You’ll find some of the finest available all-natural products from pasture-raised animals at Iris, including: Battenkill Milk from the Battenkill Valley Creamery in Washington County; Koch’s all-natural, pasture-raised turkey from Pennsylvania; Berkshire Bacon from the Edwards of Surry Farms in Virginia; and Eggs from Feather Ridge Farm in Elizaville, NY.

These ingredients are featured in some stellar sandwiches like the curried smoked turkey salad on cranberry pecan bread; a BLT on whole grain with pickled egg; and a breakfast baguette with hard-boiled egg, Edwards ham, cheddar, house-made salsa and Dijon mayo.

Special this week is a Caprese salad using Rachel’s own homegrown basil from the cafe’s plot in the community garden down the block.

Iris inhabits a beautiful space on a quiet block, and is well worth a special trip. Stop in and say hello sometime. For those not from the ‘hood, stop by for lunch or breakfast on your way to Governor’s Island or Brooklyn Bridge Park!

As always Nona subscribers can email with subject line ‘Iris’ for their chance to win. New subscribers can enter promo code ‘Iris’ when they sign up. Winners will be drawn next Thursday (July 29). Please spread the word!
