If you somehow missed out on the opportunity to gorge yourself on grilled meats over 4th of July weekend, not to worry, the grilling season appears to just be picking up momentum. Enter Meatopia: BBQ NYC, brainchild of Josh Ozersky (award-winning food writer), Jimmy Carbone (Taste of Tribeca Co-Chair) and pit master Robbie Richter of Fatty ‘Cue. The event, which takes place this Sunday, July 11th from 11:30am – 5pm on Governor’s Island, will feature over 30 chefs and grillers with a veritable smörgåsbord of meats to choose from (full list of menu items here).
The event is the centerpiece of Mayor Bloomberg’s “July Good Beer Month,” focusing and supporting the local community with walk-around tastings, beer and live entertainment. Participating chefs have been encouraged to use meat from sustainable farms that raise animals in humane conditions, and much of the product will come from a great list of regional NY and NJ farms (list of chefs and farms is available here).
Tickets can be purchased through EventBrite here, and they range from the $25 “Select” ticket, which gets you three prime tasting demos, to the $150 “Whole Hog” VIP tickets, which will get you into 12 demos, unlimited bottled water, access to a tented seating area, and even your own personal “food runner” (no, it’s not us – we applied but they said we were too out of shape. No arguments there.)
The event will also feature live music and a variety of other local food and drink purveyors including co-organizers Sixpoint Craft Ales, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Slow Food USA and Just Food organizations. We’re hoping a portion of the meat goes to you!
