Applewood hosts Iliamna Fish Company's Christopher Nicolson at their 'Meet the Fisherman' dinner on

Ever wonder what it’s like to spend the summer camped out on the shores of Bristol Bay, Alaska, plying the waters for sockeye salmon? Want to find out, from a fellow Brooklynite who does just that every summer, while eating the salmon he caught, prepared by one of the borough’s finest chefs?

If that sounds intriguing, you might want to check out Applewood’s next edition of their ‘Meet the Farmer (Fisherman) Dinner.’ On January 25th the Park Slope pioneer of local, seasonal, sustainable cooking,  will be hosting Christopher Nicolson of the Iliamna Fish Company.

Nicolson, a Greenpointer, Alaskan fisherman, and winemaker at the Red Hook Winery, has been been fishing for wild sockeye with his family each summer for his entire life. He and his cousin started Iliamna Fish Company a few years ago to bring the cream of their catch directly to Brooklynites through his once-a-year salmon CSA.

Fishing in Alaska is no joke, so the dinner conversation should be exciting. As Christopher wrote in his recent account of the past season:

“Colossal waves batter our boat. We tie up to a large vessel to off-load our boat full of fish. The bow line snaps, a huge wave spills over the stern, we hop into the dark cold water. A line is tossed to us and we’re hauled in. We watch our boat drift back in the waves, sink and then capsize. Holy smokes.”

The dinner will feature a four-course tasting menu, featuring Iliamna’s sockeye, with wine pairings.

As Applewood writes: “”This is a rare opportunity to meet a third-generation fisherman who offers a delicious and sustainable alternative to commercially-sourced seafood.”

Make a reservation, bring a friend, and prepare for epic tales of the briny deep.
