While sitting on the floor after a long night of trick-or-treating, stuffing your face with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and miniature Snickers Bars, a thought might cartwheel through your sugar rush – “What is chocolate?”
As luck would have it, the Mast Brothers are here to help answer that question. The Williamsburg-based chocolatiers recently embarked on a journey to La Red de Guaconejo – aka ‘The Source’ – a small organic cacao farming cooperative in the Dominican Republic from whom they source their precious beans. And they made a little movie about it:
Rick Mast says of their process:
“When it comes to making great chocolate you need two main things – the best ingredients in the world and great execution.
Our criteria for sourcing cocoa beans is as simple as we only source the best, we only source the most delicious, we only source the ingredients that allow us to make the best chocolate in the world…and that’s it.”
Not mentioned in this video (but worth noting) is Mast Brothers’ recent adventure shipping their beans from the D.R. to Brooklyn – they used a sailboat.
