There’s a new breed of CSA-inspired projects popping up in Brooklyn. The twist that these newbies are bringing to the table is something we all love: Freedom. What does that mean? You get to buy produce directly from farmers on a weekly basis, without having to commit to a full season of weekly mystery boxes of produce. We like mystery, but we like convenience too.

We recently posted about This Batch, a Boerum Hill-based CSA-type service that will notify members in advance about what’ll be in the box each week. Members have the option of then deciding whether or not they want in that particular week.

Joining the alt-CSA fray is Plovgh, another Brooklyn-based crew offering up a refreshingly freewheeling approach that allows multiple farmers to post what they’ve got available at any given time on Plovgh’s website. Hungry Brooklynites can choose what they want from any of the farmers they want, and can pick it all up in a single box at a pre-determined time and place. No commitments! This week, you can get in on potatoes from Healthway Farms, Honey & Eggs from Neversink Farm, and chicken and duck from Raghoo Farms. Pick what you want, add it to your cart, and pick it all up in Greenpoint on March 12.
