Here’s a look at some great local food events/happenings around the ‘hood this weekend.
Chestnut’s Thursday Night Summer Series
Chestnut in Carroll Gardens is hosting themed dinners on Thursday nights. Next Thursday (August 12), get your bibs ready for their New England Lobster Bake.

Strong Place Opens
Strong Place, a sister restaurant to small-plate heaven Bocca Lupo in Cobble Hill, opened this week on Court St. in Carroll Gardens. They’ve got some great-sounding gastropub fare on the menu, as well as a serious selection of local craft brews on draft (including Nona favorite Sixpoint Gorilla Warfare).

Classes at The Brooklyn Kitchen
Who wants to go back to school early? No one? The Brooklyn Kitchen’s lineup of classes in August just might change your mind. Highlights in the coming week include a pickling class with Bob McClure of local fave McClure’s Pickles; a seminar on summer-friendly raw fish dishes with Aaron Oster of Salumeria Rosi; and ‘Local Summer’ a class on how to grow and eat your (or someone else’s) entire summer garden.

On the Farms
Eagle Street Rooftop Farm: Stop by this Sunday from 10am-4pm to buy some of their fresh organic produce at the market or to volunteer. From 2-3pm they’re hosting a free workshop on wild cooking and edible weeds with locavore heroine Leda Meredith. Leda says “I actually convinced super farmer Annie Novak NOT to weed so I can teach.”
The Added Value Community Farms in Red Hook and on Governors Island are busy as usual over the weekend. Stop by the Red Hook farm on Saturday between 10am and 4pm to check out their produce at the market or to get your hands dirty farming. Or take the boat to Governor’s Island on Saturday or Sunday to buy fresh island produce or to volunteer (starting at 11am).
The Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm will be offering their rooftop organic produce and tasty salads at Brooklyn Flea on Saturday. You also can find their produce at these locations: Weekday On-Site Market – Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3pm-7pm in the lobby of the building housing the farm, 37-18 Northern Blvd, Queens. Saturday Farm Stand – Saturday, 11am-3pm at Vesta restaurant, 2102 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY. Sunday Farm Market – Sunday, 11am-5pm at the venerable Roberta’s, 261 Moore St, Brooklyn
As always, don’t forget your local Brooklyn Greenmarkets! Corn is in! Get out there and get some … and try it raw! There are still loads of stunningly good heirloom tomatoes and all kinds of spectacular produce at all the markets, so get out there, get the freshest, best-tasting produce around, and support our regional farmers.
